Signage & Environmental Design

From the Brand to the Storefront

I design signage and environmental graphics that bring your brand into the physical space, from storefront signs and window graphics to interior applications, with permit coordination available for Chicago businesses.

Signage Should Feel Like Part of the Brand

A storefront sign is often one of the first things people notice about a business. It needs to identify the location clearly, work with the architecture and feel consistent with the brand customers see everywhere else.

I approach signage as part of the larger identity rather than as a separate piece.

That means considering the logo, colors, materials, scale, visibility and surrounding environment before deciding how the design should translate into the physical space.

Whether it's a new storefront, an existing sign that needs to be updated or environmental graphics that bring more of the brand into the space, the goal is to create something that feels intentional and belongs there.

More Than the Sign Design

Designing a sign is only one part of getting it onto a building.

I bring years of experience working with signage in Chicago, so I understand the practical considerations that come after the design, from dimensions and placement to materials, permit requirements and coordination with sign companies. When permitting is required, I can also manage the Chicago sign permit process and help coordinate the information needed between the business owner, property owner and sign contractor.

That allows the design and permitting process to stay connected instead of treating them as two completely separate projects.

How I Approach a Signage Project

Understand the Location

I review the business, brand, storefront, existing conditions and what the signage needs to accomplish.

Design

I develop the signage direction around the identity, architecture, visibility and practical requirements of the location.

Prepare & Coordinate

Once the direction is approved, I prepare the necessary design information and coordinate details with the sign company, fabricator or other project partners.

Permitting

When required, I can manage the Chicago sign permit process, including the applicable zoning, electrical, Public Way or other approvals involved in the project.

Production & Installation

I will remain involved through fabrication and installation coordination to help make sure the approved design is carried through correctly.

Chicago Sign Permits

Sign regulations can affect the size, location, projection, illumination and installation of a proposed sign.

I provide sign permit coordination for Chicago businesses and work through the applicable review process so owners and sign contractors have a clearer path from the proposed design to an approved permit.

Depending on the project, this may involve zoning review, electrical review, Public Way approval or other documentation required by the City of Chicago.
